On this Out d’Coup Xtra, Dr. Colleen Clemens joins Kevin to talk about misogynist, right-wing trolls and toxic masculinity. Following yet another horrific mass shooting in Texas earlier this month, Clemens tweeted “Toxic masculinity is killing everyone. REPEAT. Toxic masculinity is killing everyone. REPEAT. Toxic masculinity is killing everyone. REPEAT.” That was enough to draw vicious attacks from the bottom-feeders on the right. Her article, “Why I Said No to Tucker Carlson, and Why My “No” Didn’t Matter,” appeared this weekend on Raging Chicken Press.
Colleen Lutz Clemens, Ph.D., associate professor of Non-Western Literatures and Director of Women’s and Gender Studies at Kutztown University in Pennsylvania, earned her Ph.D. in Post-Colonial Literature at Lehigh University. Raging Chicken readers and listeners know Clemens as the co-creator of the podcast Inside 254. Keep your eyes out for an episode of Inside 254 talking about toxic masculinity coming soon.

Republican efforts to repeal Obamacare, dead. Zombie repeal lives on. Bernie Sanders goes on CNN to announce he’s moving forward with a single-payer bill. Meanwhile, House Democrats are already moving on a Medicare for All plan with HR 676. As of today, 116 Democrats have signed on to the bill, including all five from Pennsylvania. Those same House Democrats vow not to withhold funding for anti-abortion candidates. Stephen Miller tells the press Trump’s new immigration plan is not racist, you cosmopolitan idiots. Puts a stake in Statue of Liberty mythology along the way. The Mooch got screwed. Trump Organization prepared to start a trade war with China on Friday. Trump-loving gun fetishist calls for shoot protesters at Trump’s Huntington, West Virginia rally today. And, Millennials are now the largest voting bloc according to a new report from the Pew Research Center.
The Fairness Center along with other Commonwealth Foundation and Koch Brother groups are suing teachers...and carpetbagging from Oklahoma? You bet. Lou Barletta set to officially join the clown car on Friday. Much heralded natural gas severance tax in PA budget negotiations will force the DEP to privatize fracking permits. Governor Tom “Carbon” Wolf doesn’t believe the environment will be weakened. The Stand encampment in Lancaster County will have to find a new location to resist the Atlantic Sunrise pipeline. The 107-acre farm was just sold to Williams, the pipeline company. Can’t imagine pipeline protesters will be welcome. Lancaster Against Pipelines says, "The Stand is not a property. It's a vibrant grassroots movement." The fight goes on.
In today’s last call: Southern and tropical birds seen in Central Pennsylvania. No climate change here, Governor Wolf. Space Fest this weekend at the Intrepid Air and Space Museum in NYC. The ethics of exploring Mars. “Let’s not use Mars as a backup planet,” says Lucianne Walkowicz from the Chicago based Adler Planetarium. Checking in with Woodland Farm Brewery and Fulton Chain Craft Brewery next week. And, Sean gives us the full wedding recap.

John McCain has been diagnosed with brain cancer, according to the Mayo clinic in Phoenix, AZ. The prognosis is not good for McCain. McCain’s announcement drew some of the attention away from Mitch McConnell’s colossal failure to repeal and replace Obamacare. The CBO scores McConnell’s last ditch attempt to repeal the ACA without replacing it. According to the report, more than 32 million Americans would be thrown off health insurance - a full 10 million more than under the GOPs repeal and replace plan. Trump orders Senate Republicans to come up with a repeal and replace plan. Late night meetings yield diddly. Sean Kitchen heads to DC for health care protests. 155 people arrested. Pennsylvania activists were there as well and converged on Senator Toomey’s DC office - there is no place you can hide Senator. And Sean gets a close up of a Rand Paul staffer...and he’s exactly what you’d expect.
Less than a week after a consultants report on the future of PA’s State System of Higher Education was released, Chancellor Frank Brogan announces his “retirement.” Brogan was hired almost four years ago through an unprecedented secret search process in which search committee members were forced to sign confidentiality agreements by former Board of Governors chair, Guido Piccini. Brogan’s hiring was the third straight chancellor from Florida who rose the political ladder as Jeb Bush’s right-hand-man in education, despite a lack of academic credentials. I guess secret processes don’t lead to the best-qualified candidate, do they, Guido? Jess King launches her challenge to Smucker to a pretty impressive crowd. And, Daryl Metcalfe breaks down and cries again after getting called a racist.
In space news, Elon Musk warns that government needs to regulate the development of AI before robots start killing people in the street. Google Street View now lets you explore the International Space Station. NASA releasing hundreds of videos to YouTube. Pennsylvania climate to be like Texas by 2100. Free Will Brewing sells out almost immediately of its Cloudy2 can release last week. Freewill's collaboration with Lavante Brewing was a New England-style IPA and it's awesome. And it’s Shark Week...in Harrisburg. Or, at least at Pizza Boy?

Senator Turtle, aka Mitch McConnell, prepares to introduce GOP Healthcare Bill 1.1 today. Medicaid cuts remain. Dangles dollars in an attempt to pass the new version - exactly in the way we said he would. Joe Scarborough of Morning Joe leaves the Republican Party to media fanfare. But who really cares? FCC looks to end net neutrality. Over 100,000 websites, activists, and organizations stage an online protest in defense of a free and open internet. G20 protests say that another world is not only possible, it’s necessary. “Ninja Turtle” riot police tear gas anti-KKK protesters in Charlottesville, VA. 23 people were arrested. As it turns out, police made house calls ahead of the protest showing either that they really care or that our surveillance state has gotten WAY out of hand.
Harrisburg police inadvertently admit that they are sharing and consulting with state surveillance center - so-called “fusion centers.” Our little slice of Big Brother right here in the Keystone state. Gov. Wolf allows a hollow budget to go into effect. PA State lawmakers decide a revenue package is not really urgent. They try one sneak attack against Medicaid before they went off to enjoy their summer. Long-awaited consultant report on the future of PASSHE - Pennsylvania’s 14 public universities. What will this mean for the future of public higher education in the state? A second PA Senate review is due December 1.
In space news, beam me up, Scotty, except in Chinese. Chinese scientists successfully teleport photon to a satellite in orbit. NASA awards $200,000 for Mars housing. Huge advances in the use of recycled materials in construction. Imagine if we had the will to do it here. Fittingly, Pizza Boy releases Flying Laser Beams. Sean says, Rye Me a River. Gollum reads Trump. All that and more on today’s show.

The 4th of July does not give us a break from the degradation of our democracy. Ted Cruz gets Trump embrace for a heartless health care plan. The Washington Post reports that a new analysis from the right-wing American Enterprise Institute shows that the White House gender pay gap has more than tripled in the first six months of Trump rule. Trump organization turns to social media and the Justice Department to increase attacks on media. Rachel Maddow issues warning to journalists after exposing forged secret documents. Trump has trouble finding a hotel room in Hamburg as G20 protests explode ahead of the beginning of today’s summit. Trump builds alliances with global strongmen. Zombies march in Hamburg’s streets. And California Governor Jerry Brown announces climate summit next year in San Francisco. Here’s mud in your eye, Donny.
Right-wing militia wannabe shoots hisself at Gettysburg. He was there to defend dead Confederate soldiers against the threat of a fake Antifa action. Pennsylvania faces yet another credit downgrade as fake budget still in search of funding. PA’s Republican House Majority Leader Dave Reed saying Thursday there is still no agreement. House is in session today. Senate will be in session tomorrow. There’s always the Chris Christie option - Shut down the government to get primo beach space for you and your family. Harrisburg police lobbying city council for $65,000 to militarize their operations. Republican Congressman Lloyd Smucker from Lancaster gets the first challenger for 2018. Bring the class and pipeline war. As Gov. Wolf doubles down on fossil fuels and Trump walks away from the Paris Agreement, global automakers are making big moves to go electric. Volvo just announced it will be ALL electric or hybrid beginning in 2019. France announces it will end sales of gas or diesel cars by 2040. Norway will ban non-electric or hybrid cars by 2025. And Tesla rolls out the Tesla 3 today.
In today’s last call, PA Gubernatorial hopeful Paul Mango gets spiritual in the Capitol. And, we’ll sort out the biggest story of the summer - are babies being secretly sent to Mars to become slaves? Yes, NASA actually had to weigh in on this one. Insert facepalm here. Robocop is real...in Dubai. And, Raging Chicken takes step toward Houston for first annual SpaceCom.

Today the Pennsylvania Conference of Teamsters organized a rally on the Capitol steps in Harrisburg against right-wing Republican attempts to pass so-called "Right to Work" legislation in the state. About 1,000 labor activists and allies converged to for a rally and then lobbying.
After the rally, Kevin and Sean sat down for lunch and beer at McGrath's Pub to reflect on the day's event and the organizing that will be necessary for the weeks and months ahead.

Comey testifies...media thrilled to be back in a normal news-as-entertainment mode as Republicans use the cover of the hearings to advance healthcare bill. Is Jeff Sessions preparing to fall on his sword to save a Trump presidency? Teresa May pretends her party didn’t just get a shellacking. Meanwhile, Jeremy Corbyn shows that true left progressive agendas have broad appeal. Is this the new progressive playbook? California seems to think so as the state advances its single-payer health care program.
It just may be time for a serious discussion of Universal Basic Income. Finland’s experience finds a significant decline of people’s stress levels. Corbyn introduced the idea that UBI may provide a solution to automation. Turns out that there were some experiments with UBI in the U.S. and Canada in the 1970s.
In the resistance this week, March for Truth in cities across the nation. Sean Kitchen was on hand in Harrisburg. In Harrisburg, March for People’s Budget takes over the Capitol rotunda...then the streets. Senator Mike Regan pays a visit to Range Resources as he introduced legislation criminalizing pipeline protesters. Scott Wagner takes to the airways to embrace John Oliver’s scathing critique of Wagner as climate change denier. And looks like there may be a showdown in Harrisburg this week as anti-racist activists plan on blocking an anti-Muslim, white supremacist march.
Planned Parenthood fundraiser this weekend at the Allentown Brew Works. Turzai bowls in Capitol building. Oldest human fossils found...105,000 years older than previously known fossils. Free Will Brewing closes out its indoor beer garden as part of Philly Beer Week. Pizza Boy brings the mint in new release. And so much more.

Trump pulls out from Paris Climate Agreement. Silicon Valley comes out strong against the decision. While the Trump organization indulges in right-wing climate conspiracy insanity, will exiting the Paris Agreement lead to a more “muscular movement?” Apparently, the Weather Channel is all in. ExxonMobil shareholders force the company to disclose costs of climate change. Activists flood to the White House in protest of Trump’s announcement.
Hurricane season starts with no one in charge of FEMA or NOAA.
A week after a Portland, Oregon white supremacist, Jeremy Joseph Christian, killed two men and seriously wounded a third after the men intervened to stop Christian from berating two women of color with racist hate speech, how will communities respond? Meanwhile, Washington State Trump campaign operative rewards right-wing “free speech warrior,” with a portrait of Trump for his handy work during the violent clashes at Berkeley in April. And let’s not forget the nooses that are appearing around Washington, D.C. including the new Smithsonian African-American History Museum, Will we still see more pundits telling us to “ignore them and they’ll go away,” or will we be force that will push back the ugly growth of fascism? Time will tell. Maybe take some advice from Timothy Snyder’s new book, On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons from the Twentieth Century.
The March for Truth is happening across the country on Saturday calling for an independent investigation of Trump’s and his campaign’s ties to Russia. Sean Kitchen will be featured in the March for Truth in Harrisburg. Rick Smith will be in New York City.
More than 200 Inauguration Day Anti-Trump protesters facing 80-year prison terms. More than 130 of those arrested have joined a “points of unity” agreement to reject plea deals requiring selling out fellow activists.
It’s budget season in Pennsylvania. Monday will be a day of action in the state Capitol. Legislators return to Harrisburg on Monday and face another contentious session ahead of the June 30th budget deadline. Activists will be filling the Rotunda and the Capitol steps beginning Monday morning. For more details, go to PAChoice.org/BudgetAction.
So-called Republican Moderate Charlie Dent says he’ll welcome the journalist-assaulting freshman congressman from Montana, Greg Gianforte. Dent sticks his head in the sand, saying “we don’t know all the facts” about Gianforte’s assault on Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs.
Philly Beer Week starts today. It’s always Sunny Side Up in Philadelphia. Pizza Boy will be in Philly this week. Summertime convinces Sean and Kevin to get active to break out of Trump fatigue. Shout out to Blooming Glen Farms.

Friday May 26, 2017
It’s Friday, May 26, 2017. Welcome to Raging Chicken’s Out d’Coup podcast. I am Kevin Mahoney, editor, and founder of Raging Chicken Press. I’m back from the West Coast and already neck deep in the insanity once again. Each week I talk to our Capitol muckraker-in-chief, Sean Kitchen, about the good, the bad, and the ugly in state and national politics.
It’s media assault week across the nation. Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs grabbed by the neck and body slammed by Montana Republican congressional candidate Greg Gianforte. Gianforte charged with assault, but still goes on to win the election. Our own Sean Kitchen thrown out of a legislative office and threatened with arrest for covering civil disobedience in PA State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe.
Trump Russia probe heats up so the Trump Organization gets the hell out of dodge to take awkward photos with world leaders. Trump family photo with Pope Francis, priceless. Melania’s hand slapping skills, high. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross is pleased as punch that the Saudi’s know how to suppress protest. Meanwhile, on the home front, Washington State Senator joins growing number of right-wing legislators proposing legislation to criminalize protest. Housing and Urban Development Secretary and former sleepy presidential candidate Ben Carson calls poverty a “state of mind.” That state of mind will become increasingly important as the GOP’s repeal and replace health care plan will throw 23 million Americans off health insurance. In the end, more people will be without healthcare than before Obamacare was passed. And, Trump’s proposed budget leaves Paul Ryan salivating and aroused at the prospect of cutting $3.6 trillion to social programs and delivering billions of dollars to the billionaire donor-class and the military. Several things have become clear with the Trump budget, however. 1) The Trump organization can’t do math; 2) there is no separation between Trump and the Paul Ryan wing of the GOP; and, 3) Budget Secretary Mick Mulvaney may just be the biggest asshole ever to serve in the U.S. government.
If the national picture weren’t enough to sharpen your pitchforks and light your torches, we’ve got enough going on in Pennsylvania to keep your resistance fuel topped off. The March on Harrisburg completed their 100+ mile march from Philadelphia and the civil disobedience began immediately. Activists marched on Harrisburg to demand an end to political gerrymandering; a ban on legalized bribery of public officials; and, automatic voter registration. Three days of action directed at State Government Chair and well-known loopy legislator Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, frightened his little snowflake heart so that he begged for a police escort through the Capitol all week. He did have time for a pizza party with NRA folks while activists occupying his office were being arrested. Makes sense since a pro-guns-in-schools bill still making its way through the PA Senate. Pipeline protests grow. Larry Krazner wins! Oh, and so much more as the budget season heats up in the state Capitol.
In our last segment, we’ll take a break to check in on the latest in space and beer! NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson ties the record for most time spent outside the ISS during her 10th space walk. She’s also set the American record for most time in space 534 days. More to come as the ISS ages. Mars mission still go, but climate projects cut. And Galactic Capitalism on its way as lucrative asteroid mining no longer in the realm of science fiction.
