It's a special Monday evening edition of The Wednesday Show with Cyril Mychalejko. It's been quite a week in Bucks County. We've seen rising tensions over mask mandates; right-wing ideologues flaming about Critical Race Theory; and, school board elections that seem to be smack dab in the middle of it all.
In the midst of all that, David Damsker, the Director of the Bucks County Health Department is under scrutiny for encouraging schools to evade state COVID regulations, dismissing the seriousness of the pandemic, and bragging about his dismissal of CDC guidance. That came after a series of emails were released showing Damsker encouraging a day care not to report COVID cases and so much more.

On this week’s show, we’ll be talking about Cyril’s freshly minted column, “Join the Civil Rights movement of 2021 and beyond,” published today in the Bucks County Courier Times. Cyril had the opportunity to talk to Kadida Kenner of the New Pennsylvania Project about the critical need to protect and extend voting rights in PA at a moment when echoes of Jim Crow are heard in our media, school board meetings, and legislative sessions. I also hope to get his take on the decision by the Central Bucks School Board to NOT require masks for the upcoming school year despite new guidance from the CDC. And, if we have time, we might dip into Kathy Barnette’s bid for the Republican nomination for the PA Senate.

Today we talk about Texas Dems leaving their state en masse to prevent new voter suppression legislation; Biden’s Philadelphia speech on voting rights; PASSHE Board of Governors voting to move forward with meeting 6 universities into 2; the coal miners’ strike in Alabama; and, we get to hear a little bit about Cyril’s new column (now released) on critical race theory. This week Cyril is flying solo! Today, Cyril talks to locally grown Progressive from Bucks County Rotimi Adeoye. He worked in Congress as a Staff Assistant to Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), and Press Secretary to Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05). He is currently working on a campaign to defend and expand voting rights and democracy.

On today's show, we talk about Cyril's latest column, “Conversion therapy is a barbaric abuse of LGBTQ youth and it's legal in PA” and how important it is to support state legislators like Jessica Benham (D-Allegheny County) & Brian Sims (D-Philadelphia) who are working to ban conversion therapy. Their co-sponsored bill, House Bill 729 would, as Cyril puts is, "ban this medical quackery based on the disproven premise that being LGBTQ is some kind of disease or disorder."
Then we dig into Cyril's newsletter on Substack a bit. We take a look at his news round up, "White Supremacy Gains Popularity in Oregon, Conservatives Give Millions to White Nationalist Hate Group, Climate Defenders in the Crosshairs, and More!” Then we check in with his latest "Meet a Progressive" feature, "Activism You Can Dance to with Bonnie Chang, "founder of Bucks Voices, a voter engagement group based in Bucks County, PA, that “informs, engages and mobilizes” our community to realize the ideals of our democracy."
